What is Clindamycin Phosphate Foam USP, 1%?

  • Clindamycin Phosphate Foam, 1% is a prescription medicine used in the topical treatment of acne vulgaris in people  12 years and older.

Who should not use Clindamycin Phosphate Foam USP, 1%?

  • People with a history of colitis, Crohn’s disease, or severe diarrhea with past antibiotic use.

What should I tell my doctor before using Clindamycin Phosphate Foam USP, 1%?

  • Tell your doctor if you are taking neuromuscular blocking agents or erythromycin.
  • Tell your doctor about all the medicines and skin products you use, especially if you will have surgery with general anesthesia. Clindamycin phosphate foam can affect how certain medicines work when used in general anesthesia.
  • Talk to your doctor if you are using any product containing erythromycin.
  • Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, nursing, or will nurse your unborn baby.

How should I use Clindamycin Phosphate Foam USP, 1%?

  • Use Clindamycin Phosphate Foam USP, 1% only as directed by your doctor.
  • Clindamycin Phosphate Foam USP, 1% is for topical use only.

What should I avoid when using Clindamycin Phosphate Foam USP, 1%?

  • Avoid fire, flame and/or smoking during and immediately following application.
  • Avoid getting Clindamycin Phosphate foam in or near your eyes, mouth, lips, or broken skin. If you get Clindamycin Phosphate foam in your eyes, mouth, on lips or broken skin, rinse well with water.
  • Avoid with products containing erythromycin. 

What are the most common side effects associated with Clindamycin Phosphate Foam USP, 1%?

  • The most common side effects are headache and application site reactions including burning, itching, and dryness.

What are other possible side effects associated with Clindamycin Phosphate Foam USP, 1%?

  • Clindamycin can cause serious side effects including severe colitis, which may result in death, diarrhea, and bloody diarrhea.  Stop use and call your doctor if stomach cramps or severe diarrhea occurs. 
  • Skin irritation may occur.  Stop using Clindamycin Phosphate foam and call your doctor if you develop skin irritation during treatment with Clindamycin Phosphate foam.
